A Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) is a healthcare or allied professional who has completed specialized education and training in breastfeeding and lactation support. This certification reflects foundational knowledge in infant feeding, common breastfeeding challenges, and evidence-based support strategies.
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is the international gold standard in lactation and breastfeeding care. IBCLCs are highly trained clinicians who specialize exclusively in lactation and infant feeding. Certification requires:
- Extensive lactation-specific education (95+ hours)
- A significant number of supervised clinical practice hours (1000+ hours)
- Successful completion of a comprehensive international board examination
- Ongoing continuing education to maintain certification
IBCLCs are trained to assess and support complex feeding challenges, including issues related to infant anatomy, milk production, maternal health, medically complex infants, and feeding difficulties that require advanced clinical assessment and collaboration with other healthcare providers.
In my practice, I am a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and Certified Breastfeeding Specialist with clinical experience in maternal–infant care. I have completed all required IBCLC education and clinical practice hours and am scheduled to write the IBCLC board examination in April 2026. My care is grounded in nursing practice, evidence-based lactation support, and trauma-informed, family-centred care.
